Frequent Questions and Answers

  1. Are there scholarships available through the Film School?

The Film School offers a number of departmental assistantships, as well as the Blockbuster Fellowship. You may apply for all assistantships/fellowships available by indicating on your Film School application that you wish to be considered for assistance and including a letter concerning your financial need.

  2. How do I apply for a Graduate Assistantship?

Check the appropriate box on your Film School MFA Application and include a letter outlining your financial need.

  3. The University offers University Fellowships and several Minority Assistantships that are open to all graduate students? How can I apply?

Due to the length of time our Admissions Committee spends in review of the applications, invitations to enroll are issued several months after University deadlines for these University-Wide fellowships and assistants. The program will submit applications for eligible 2nd year students in January of their first year of enrollment.

  4. What is the Academic Common Market?

The Academic Common Market is an interstate agreement among southern states for sharing academic programs. Participating states enable their residents who qualify for admission to enroll in other states on an in-state tuition basis. If you are a resident of AL, AR, DE, GA, KY, LA, MD, MS, OK, SC, TN, VA, WV after you are accepted to the Film School, we’ll give you the name of the contact person in your state so you can begin to apply.

  5. Can I work part-time while enrolled in the Film School?

Our program is a very intensive, collaborative, hands-on filmmaking experience, during which you work not only on your own films, but on your classmates' films, while taking screenwriting courses. Thirteen hour days tend to be the standard and weekends are solely for filmmaking. Holding a job just doesn’t work.

  6. If I enroll at FSU for a year, can I claim residency for tuition purposes?

Only if you are awarded a graduate assistantship or if you purchase property, marry someone from FL, or do something to convince the Registrar that you will be a permanent resident of the state and are not here just for educational purposes.

  7. Is there a Graduate Admissions Brochure I can view?

Yes. You can view the brochure in PDF format by clicking here.

  8. When are the tours and information sessions for the MFA Program?

Film School information sessions and tours will resume January 26th, 2007 at 11am for MFA prospectives and 9:30am for BFA prospectives, and continue every other Friday at those times. Please contact the Film School at (850) 644-7728 for more information

  9. Do I have to take the GRE? When do I have to submit the scores?

The GRE is required of all applicants. We cannot accept other scores (LSAT, GMAT, TOEFL) in lieu of the GRE. Your GRE scores are considered part of your application, and must be received no later than late January to be reviewed with the rest of your materials.
