The MFA D2 screening will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 7:00pm in the Student Life Building.

D2 students have a limited number of tickets to distribute to their guests, however a second, smaller theatre will be available for overflow seating.

A special screening of the documentary A Powerful Noise will take place on Friday, August 8th, 2008 at 6pm in The Student Life Center located at 942 Learning Way. This emotional documentary chronicles the journeys of three women each overcoming gender barriers to rise up and claim a voice in their societies.

Hanh is an HIV-positive widow in Vietnam. Nada, a survivor of the Bosnian war. And Jacqueline works the slums of Bamako, Mali. Three very different lives. Three vastly different worlds. But they share something in common: Power. Through their empowerment and ability to empower others, Hanh, Nada and Jacqueline are sparking remarkable changes.

A Powerful Noise was directed by Tom Cappello with production manager Allison Troxell, (both Film School alumni) in a partnership with the NGOs CARE and ONE. The filmmakers will be on hand for a post-screening Q&A along with Terry Coonan of The FSU Center for the Advancement of Human Rights.

SPECIAL SCREENING

8:30pm

A special screening of the feature film Ballast, Sundance Film Festival winner for Best Direction (Lance Hammer) and Best Cinematography (Lol Crawley), will take place on Friday, August 8th, 2008 at 8:30pm in The Student Life Center located at 942 Learning Way.

A single mother and her embattled son struggle to subsist in a small Mississippi Delta township. An act of violence thrusts them into the world of an emotionally devastated highway store owner, awakening the fury of a bitter and longstanding conflict.

Director Lance Hammer along with Sundance Film Festival Director and Film School Distinguished Lecturer, Geoffrey Gilmore, will be on hand to hold a Q&A after the screening.

Gold Carpet Gala

5:30pm - 11:00p

The Gold Carpet Gala Fundraiser is the seminal event of the year for the Film School and for the City of Tallahassee. Bringing in film industry professionals and special celebrity guests, the evening brings with it the glamour and excitement of Hollywood.

Starting with an exclusive gourmet reception where our supporters get to meet and mingle with our special guests, moving to the premier screening of our graduating MFA thesis films, and finishing off with a wrap party on the Film School sound stages that brings in the dawn.

Past attendees and alumni guests have included: Jonathan King, Executive Vice President of Production at Participant Productions (Good Night and Good Luck, Inconvenient Truth, Kite Runner) and Ron Friedman, Screenwriter of Brother Bear, Chicken Little, and Open Season and Ryan Saul of the Metropolitan Talent Agency of Los Angeles who represents clients such as the creators of TV hits, Frasier, CSI: Miami and movies like Prairie Home Companion.

This year's gala will continue with more special guests and a lot more Hollywood.

MFA Thesis Films

8:00pm - 10:00p

The annual public screening of MFA thesis films will be held Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 8:00pm in the Student Life Cinema.

Though admission is free, the event will be ticketed. Tickets will be available free of charge through the university online ticketing system starting June 16th.

There will be a second matinee showing on Sunday, August 10th at 4:00pm. Also at the Student Life Cinema.
